ok i have a 5.0hp briggs and stratton on my go kart and i had sat outside for about a year. we took it in the shop and the thing was clean inside and out. so we cleaned the carb, got the water out, etc. but when we tried to crank it it just kept backfiring iether through the muffler or carb, so we took the top off and the valve is stuck, how do I unstick it? we have already soaked it in wd40 over night and nothing.

when i got my 20 hp briggs and found it had a stuck valve i just put some marvel mystery oil in the port blocked it off used a rubber hammer to tap it down then i cranked it over to open it up i also filled the valve cover with marvel but then after that i removed the valve to see if it was bent and it was all corroded so i would check yours for corrosion then i cleaned the inside of were the valve goes. and replaced the valve.

were working with it right now and the engine will pull it up but we have to tap it back down, so idk, i might go for a 4-cycle engine this guys has for 50$ if this wont work.

Take the valve out using a flat head screw driver or something then get it on the bench grinder if u have one and get it on the wire brush and wire brush the valve stem. Get all the crap and rust of it so its nice and shiny. If u dont have a bench grinder then use a normal wire brush. Put a thin layer of oil on the valve stem and put it back in. Good as new.

^^^^^^ no no no no no no no why would u use a bench grinder on a valve!!!!!!!
take the valve spring retainers off then pull the valve out clean it up with low grit sand paper or scotch brite! after that take a small bit of scotch brite and force it through the hole in the block were the valve stem goes. after that blow it out with air and then lube it and your done.

open up the valve cover use a spring compressor to compress the spring remove the spring retainer and then pull the valve out.

Yall remove this (first picture) then u use one of these http://ecx.images-amazon.com/images/I/41TVfWhs-iL._SL500_AA280_.jpg You use that to remove one of these http://www.made-in-china.com/image/2f0j00SBQtJKlHfPqsM/Valve-Spring-Retainer-Valve-Cotter.jpg After you remove one of them you can pull this out http://www.indiabizclub.com/uploads05/8/S/EngineValve102549305.jpg

after that you clean the valve up and then clean the hole it goes in up with scotch brite which looks like this http://www.freemansupply.com/productimages/Xplus91.jpg

Valves don't bend themselves, in a flathead its impossible.

entirely possible. I trash picked a edger that had to be 30 years old. The exhaust valve was bent, get a valve to seize half way open and slam into it with the lifter and tell me it doesn't bend.
