Drum brakes, cable slips

Hello all, I have this 1978 FW & Associates kart that I am restoring. I am down to the brakes. I am trying to piece this thing together, and can find nothing on the internet. The pics explain it all. Drum brakes with cable. The kart doesn’t stop unless you mash on the pedal. If you mash on the pedal the cable clamp slips, then no brakes! My question is, is there a better setup? Is my setup wrong?? Would a second clamp help? And, are there better clamps?

I find that a rod from the brake pedal to the brake drum works for me.

It looks like you're brakes start with a rod and then it changes to cable.

Maybe try just a rod, without the cable.

And come in from the front instead of the back of the band. It will help the brakes be self energizing (more stopping power!). Grab the rear of the band and pull forward.

It does Pearl! I bought a rod from hardware store. Just have to get creative with the bends, but it will work! Thanks for all the advice everyone- Kevin
